Tips on Cleaning Windows

By John Schofield

Windows, like doors, are necessary opening in houses. Like many other parts of the house, you also need to clean your windows well to get them to function better and to last longer. It would be a hassle on your part if you keep on replacing your windows then. Here are some important tips on how you can clean your windows with efficiency.

Inside Windows

1. Collect all the necessary tools and cleaning supplies for the windows.

2. Get a bucket or a dishpan and fill it up with warn water. Make an effective cleaning solution by adding a small amount of your favourite detergent to the warm water.

3. Protect the floor areas directly under the windows by covering them with a towel before you start cleaning your windows.

4. Get the dust off the window frames first using a duster or a piece of rag (old cloth).

5. After dusting, follow it up by wiping the frames clean with soaked sponge using your cleaning solution.

6. Soak your sponge first in your bucket and follow any of these effective cleaning instructions.

• Start wiping the windows with your sponge by touching the upper left side first. Then, make an S-shape with your sponge and go downwards up to the bottom right corner of the windows.

• Start wiping the windows from the upper left corner of the windows and do the wiping straight downwards. Follow these wiping movements with more downward strokes. Dry the window using a dry rag or chamois. Do this for every wiping line that you will make. Proceed cleaning with the next line using the same steps.

• Always dry every moist line that you will make with a dry rag or chamois to avoid forming visible lines on your pane.

7. Dry up the marks of your soaked sponge on your window frames by wiping them with a dry cloth or a chamois.

Outside Windows

1. Gather all your cleaning tools and supplies near the area where you will do your cleaning. This is the efficient way of starting your cleaning rather than to keep stopping with your dusting and wiping to get every tool or supply that you need.

2. Prepare a bucket full of warm water and pour in a bit of detergent into it.

3. Remove any bothersome additions or accessories to your windows. If you use windscreens, get them off your windows first. This is so you can completely get all those dust that has been accumulating in your windows. Do not be surprised of the stale smell of your window screen because it has bravely battled the elements outdoors. You can clean the screens by getting them out of their windows. Put them under running water, preferably using a hose, and rub them together for more effective cleaning. You may also wipe the screens clean using a piece of rag or a window wand.

4. Get all the signs of cobwebs out of any corner of your windows using an old cloth or old broom.

5. Run water on your outside windows with a garden house to get dust or dirt off that was not removed before. Do the window rinsing one by one to avoid any water spots that would only make the windows look untidy after they dry up.

6. Follow the rinsing with a more thorough cleaning using a soaked sponge.

7. After soaking your sponge in your cleaning solution in the bucket, choose from any of the cleaning methods used for cleaning inside windows.

8. Dry the moist left by the soaked sponge by wiping the frames with dry rag.
