Seven Steps to Living Well With Diabetes

By Mr.Diabete

Relax.

Stress can make any illness exaggerated and can also make it harder for your body to heal after a blood sugar spike or drop. Remember that diabetes is not the end of the world and trust in your ability to keep yourself healthy through educated dieting and the good care of an excellent doctor.

Educate yourself.

Knowledge is power . . . especially when it comes to your health. Get to know the ins and outs of diabetes. What works? What doesn’t? What recipes will help you maintain an even number? Learn the symptoms that could go along with your illnesses as well. Knowing what to expect and when to consult your doctor can really ease your mind and help you gain control of your diabetes. What is abnormal for someone without diabetes could be normal for you. Through the help of your doctor you can determine when you can manage at home and when you need his or her help.

Eat well.

Having diabetes doesn’t mean you cannot eat any sugar. It simply means that you have to be a professional at knowing what you can and cannot eat. Sometimes that means playing super sleuth to new fun ways to play with food and still be healthy. There are many of diabetic recipes available online that will help you eat almost anything you want only with different ingredients.

Enlist the support of friends.

Any good health care regimen includes support. It’s ok to feel as though you can’t do it alone and if you do feel this way you should reach out to friends, family and or the help of a support group. There are often many in the area if you do your research but there are also wonderful diabetic support groups online. A support group can offer a support system that sometimes is even better than a friend or family member because they have been there and know exactly how you feel. They may also be able to share experiences that help you in your walk with diabetes.

Stay current on medications.

Never stop or skip your medications without consulting your doctor. If you cannot afford your medications your doctor may be able to supply you with samples until you are able to buy a month’s supply. Stores such as Wal-mart also have Four Dollar Medication Lists that allow you to get a month’s supply of many generic medications for only four dollars. If all else fails, you can even call around to local churches who have outreach programs. They may be able to help you purchase your medicine at no cost.

Keep appointments.

It is important to stay on top of your doctor’s appointments so that you can receive the very best care available. Your doctor can also help you keep track of changes in your condition, the need for medication changes and even spot neuropathies early to reduce the risk of nerve damage. If you do not have insurance check local clinics in your area that may have a discount rate for the uninsured. There are also free clinics in your state that you may apply for.

Don’t give up!

Above all do not give up! People with diabetes can live a long, healthy and happy life in spite of their disease. With the proper care, medication and careful dieting there is nothing you can’t do!

Being a diabetic doesn’t have to mean that your life is a series of sacrifices. When you know how to live healthier, you can indulge in foods just in a different way and you can also learn to live a normal, long and happy life along the way.
