New Year’s 2013: Spectacular fireworks displays light up the sky in cities around the world

New Year’s 2013: Spectacular fireworks displays light up the sky in cities around the world By Emma Murphy

The world officially celebrated the arrival of 2013 with fireworks lighting up the sky over dozens of cities around the globe yesterday. Asian countries were the first to ring in the new year with big fireworks displays in Sydney, which centred on the harbour bridge. 1.5 million people were estimated to watch the event in the Australian city with more than 100,000 firework patterns, costing £4.2m. Also among the most spectacular celebrations was the one in New York’s Times Square in the United States, one of the last countries to welcome in 2013. The crowd of nearly 1 million revelers counted down the final seconds of 2012 as a brightly-lit 6-ton Waterford crystal ball dropped from atop its 130-foot pole, then flashed "2013." Meanwhile, Dubai marked the new year with a light show at the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. The Dubai show had projections on a 210-metre long screen and three elements - light, water and fire. The United Kingdom also welcomed 2013 with an incredible display of pyrotechnics and lights in its capital London. About 250,000 people gathered on the banks of the Thames to witness the fantastic firework display which followed the traditional counting down of the final seconds by Big Ben.
